I received confirmation concerning the Avian Flu on Thursday, October 27th, 2022, from Dr. Richardson of the Department of Agriculture. Currently there is not a hold on poultry shows in the State. After much discussion we have decided to continue with the Poultry-Rabbit Show on November 12th. Many of the exhibitors use this show as a practice for their fair and preparation so they know what they need to work on for future shows.
However, we wanted to make you aware of a few things. First, Avian Flu has been found in back yard poultry in various parts of the state, including Osceola County. Second, it is stressed to practice biosecurity before and after the show. Thirdly, I understand the desire to free range chickens, however, by doing so you are creating the opportunity for the migrating birds to expose your birds to the Avian Flu. Protect your birds by keeping them isolated as much as possible from wild birds, especially waterfowl. Furthermore, if you know anyone who is allowing their flock to free range, please pass along this information.
Please do not bring sick birds to the show. Be sure the birds are pest free. Birds will be inspected for general health at check in. Remember that showing any animals at any shows may expose them to unknown health issues. The rules state: “The Poultry Rabbit Show, KVLS/ Osceola County Fair, and the Fair Board are not responsible for any loss or illness.”
Practice biosecurity when you take your animals home after the show. Keep your animals separated from the rest of your flock for a minimum of 30 days.
Report any deaths to your Fish and Wildlife Conservation.
Thank you to everyone who has registered so far. We are waiving late fees until 11 pm on November 2, 2022. So, there is still time to register.
